Problem/hypothesis – time-based pricing for electric scooters prompts riders to take more risk. If you think that you can skip the red light, why pay more, right? Have seen it and have done it.
- Stockholm has a distinct jaywalking culture in general. Time-based pricing only encourages that.
- Electric Scooter safety is a super relevant topic and some bad news have occurred.
A helmet is not the answer. Design a solution that would increase safety on the roads by eliminating the need of taking unnecessary risk.
Identify when the rider is at an intersection and grant a free safety time buffer to wait. Yes, it would be ideal to sync with real-time city traffic, but we can make it a bit more accessible technically by assuming that a full stop means a red light.
How it works: when the scooter makes a full stop at a specific intersection, the app starts the Riskfree timer, granting those 10-30 seconds to wait and not stress. At the end of the ride, you pay for the time on the go and the risky seconds are waved.
Riders incentive: I’ll take the scooter that gives me the safety wiggle room.
Business incentive: Riders will go for the more generous and safe option.
We hurry and take unnecessary risks to save costs, not necessarily out of necessity. Happy riding!
